How Does Credit & Debit Card Fraud Happen?
Today’s card thieves range anywhere from the average Joe hoping to make a quick buck to the highly skilled, highly resourceful hacker ready to sell your information. To better protect yourself against credit or debit card fraud, it is important to first understand how thieves get your information.
Lost or Stolen Card
The card is somewhere...last time you saw it was at the office, or in the car on the way home or under the pile of bills in the kitchen. That was over a week ago. If it was left in a public place, it could be compromised.
Phishing
A few days or weeks after you placed that online order an email, text message or phone call asked you to confirm your card information. Everything sounded and looked legitimate. Online retailers do not need you to confirm your card information.
Dumpster Diving
It’s time for spring cleaning and that folder full of bills is getting out of control. The oldest bills get tossed in the recycling bin.
Point of Sale
Since your last visit to your favorite gas station, a “repair technician” placed a small, indistinguishable card skimmer into the gas pump. You slide your card into the machine, like you do every week. This time your card is read by the gas pump and the skimmer.
Cyber Attack
A company’s computer system was hacked into and every transaction was recorded.
At SunWest we have automated systems in place to monitor your account. If we detect suspicious activity, we will contact you via phone to confirm that you are in fact the one making the purchase. However, if we cannot reach you, we will place a temporary hold on your card to reduce the potential for future fraud.
Even with our systems and procedures, there are steps you can take to minimize the possibility of your information being taken.
Don’t give your account information to anyone over the phone unless you personally made the call and know it is a reputable company.
When using a card at a gas station, look for security tape around the card reader. If there’s no tape, or it looks damaged, go to a different pump or gas station.
Shred all documents containing account information or any personal information using a cross-cut shredder. Mix the shredded documents in with the regular trash, not the recycling. If you place your full trash bags in a bin for pick-up, make sure it’s not the top bag where it can be easily ripped open.
If you receive an email or text message asking to confirm your card information, do not respond to it or click on any link in the email or message. If you are concerned about an online order, call the company or visit the company’s web site by restarting your browser and directly typing the URL.
Save your receipts and compare them with your account statements regularly. This is the most effective way of finding out if your card information has been stolen. Look at those small charges too. Typically a criminal will make a small charge at a well known store/restaurant before making larger purchases.
